Kitchen of the week: A stylish and sophisticated space for the family lives - When Joan and Stephen Beer bought their detached Victorian house in Glasgow, it has not been updated since the 1970 After living with a small kitchen for nearly two decades, the couple decided it was time for a major overhaul, so they sought help from Emma Ellson architects Ellson Buchanan and Duncan of Heeles international cuisines.
Ellson radically redesigned home by hitting two rooms into one, and the opening of the ground floor area with a large modern extension at the rear. The result is a large contemporary kitchen with views of the garden - perfect for family living and entertaining.
'The original kitchen was very dated and dark, with orange, traditional pattern of brown,' said Heeles, who designed the new space. "Now the style is contemporary, but it still coincides with the period look of the house.

customers wanted a classic, timeless design with a calm and relaxed atmosphere, they plumped for doors resistant laminated wear, in a subtle blend of magnolia and gray, with ultra-thin handles.
"They wanted the kitchen to feel part of the whole space, not just be tucked away in a corner, so having two islands," says Heeles.
The designer has adopted a modular approach to the kitchen by creating separate zones using two units of the island. The first (white island) is a food preparation area near the dining room. This leads seamlessly into the kitchen hub, with appliances banked along a wall, which is then connected to the dining room by the bar.
"The main challenge was to ensure that large space, which could almost be described as cavernous, was transformed into a stylish kitchen, eating and dining room, with good ease of movement for all family and a natural flow between the different zones, said Heeles.
