Food Tour: A Family Shaker kitchen Scandinavian inspired - When Virginia and Darshan Loganathan moved into their Edwardian house, mid-terrace in Wimbledon, London, they knew they wanted an all- in-room family: a space of decent, inclusive size that contained the kitchen area, dining room and living. The first job was to open the ground floor in the back side and add a rear extension, so the space was large enough to accommodate all their wishes.

"Customers have a good idea of what they wanted their kitchen, but welcome comments and advice with the layout, flow and design functionality," says kitchen designer Sally Eyles.
"When you receive, their customers tend to gravitate to this space, so they very rarely use the formal living area now," she adds.

Eyles went for a custom design with, traditional cabinets, painted frame by hand. "The main concept here was a kitchen Nordic-inspired Shaker style," says she. "It is light, clean and simple, with a fat big island as a focal point.
"The beams were built into the ceiling to provide the wide open area that looks and feels like a connected space," she adds.

customers are big fans of the Little Greene paint range and wanted the wall cabinets to match the light of French gray walls. "They decided to compare it with a striking, bold color island," said Eyles, "and felt perfectly complemented Hicks Blue gray.
"The islands are a great way to maximize space in a kitchen layout and provide a real focal point for the kitchen. - We see them as a place for family to gather a casual bite to eat and enjoy the company of others "

A suspended trio dome lamps sculpted white metal adds to the sensation of contemporary Scandinavian design. The double doors at the back of the kitchen to hide a pantry for extra storage.

nickel cup satin handles create a silvery glow against the dark blue-gray and pale units
one side of the island, a corner is cut to create a small bar area -. perfect for informal dining and socializing while cooking. wooden bar stools bring in earthy hues.

A worktop Silestone was selected for practical reasons. "Customers would have liked a marble worktop, but with two young children, they chose Silestone instead, which is elegant and resistant to wear," says the designer.

The traditional, in -Frame cabinets are made from solid European oak, and carcasses and internal, Shaker-style panels are made from MDF. All cabinets are to create an atmosphere tailored exactly was the taste of the customers hand painted.

The stone suppliers recommended using a wide range of Silestone - the same as the work plans - as a backsplash behind the gas hob for an interesting look and a little different.
