Food Tour: A kitchen that promotes outdoor life - The owners of this London wanted to make the most of their newly landscaped garden, so they called the architect Daniel Rees Rees Lee Architects to create an open living space that connected the house with outside space. By reconfiguring the ground floor and a clean extension design, Rees created a light house where the family can merge indoor and outdoor living.

"Our main goal was to create a sense of openness to the garden," said the architect Daniel Rees. "the original space included a step down to the patio, with another step leading to a raised lawn."
the owners have arranged the garden to create a completely outside flat, so Rees reconfigured the house to keep with it. "We lowered the floor of the original kitchen and extension and installed a step from the living room and the hall." the level surface between the new kitchen-dining room and the patio makes it easier to move between the two areas.

the simple kitchen layout is dominated by the central island, which is positioned between the doors of the dining room and living. " We wanted to keep the kitchen area connected to the rest of the property, so we put the island here to create a clear view of the front of the house," Rees says. A walkway leads from lounge to the garden and the open view of the front door makes the kitchen feel airy and bright.
The island has a double farm sink, which is located between an integrated dishwasher and a wine refrigerator. Opposite, a large firm, ideally located to move glassware and crockery to and from the island.
"The column protruding behind it could have been a problem," says Rees, "but we changed the cabinet to keep around." The designer explains that this is a profitable alternative to deletion of the column and steel fitting behind the wall.
"We often try to integrate difficult tasks in the cabinets, so they become part of the design," he adds. "And you can see that we have done something similar with the unit on the opposite wall."

the cooking area is zoned with simple backsplash white subway tiles. Besides this, one height unit includes an American fridge freezer. "We decided against the wall units, as they could have made the room feel crowded ," says the designer.
To create more space on the worktop, Rees pulled by 150mm. the usual depth of 600mm has become a generous 750mm, which offers enough space even pots of plants fit behind the cooktop.

customers wanted to bring in natural light as much as possible, so that the skylights are a necessary complement. Instead of installing a bright light on the roof, Rees proposed two children. "We realized that a large skylight would have neighbors see. Both placed here to reduce the angle of vision," he says. "In addition, there is a more budget-friendly option, as they are of a standard size. A larger, customized version would have been more expensive. "
Behind the TV wall at the end, a cupboard under the stairs was converted into a utility closet with a washer and dryer inside. The sound of the machine spinning is blocked by a seal around the door and sound insulation.

The white walls are offset by a brick box. "customers want to add an earthy texture to match the floor tiles," says Rees. "The brick wall really warms the space is big enough to work as a canvas for painting."
Custom folding doors are larger than usual and create a beautiful large open garden. The floor tiles were performed through the deck and to improve the connection between the inside and outside.
